Near the end of October, 2007, I along with the rest of the city of San Diego was either evacuating our homes, making mental plans in case we had to evacuate our homes, or we sat glued in front of our TV sets, listening to news as dozens of fires ravaged our city. As I surfed the channels, what struck me most was the ferocious strength of the bright red flames, gobbling dry brush, homes and buildings, destroying lifetimes of possessions and memories. I felt powerless and realized that there was nothing I could do or anyone else for that matter to stop the devastation. No matter what precautions may have been taken, no matter what type of landscaping had been planted, the fire was coming and it would take an act of God to stop it. Surely those whose homes had escaped utter annihilation while their neighbor’s perished would realize that God had blessed them. Or would they? No matter how hard the firefighters fought, no matter how many aircraft we had in the air dumping water and chemicals, everyone had to come to the same conclusion, unless the winds ceased, we were in for a long fight that we could not win. Hmm…the winds had to cease. Without knowing it, we as mere humans, whether we realized it or not, had to acknowledge God’s awesome power. Unless the winds ceased, the fire would continue to rage, to burn and to destroy. Only God could cause the winds to cease (“peace be still”) and whether we admitted that or not, it was still a fact! Days passed and the war between man and fire raged on.
On Tuesday, November 13, 2007, Sonny Perdue, the Governor of Georgia scheduled a prayer vigil in response to a severe, history-making drought that had ravaged his state. Lawmakers and ministers met on the steps of the State Capitol to pray for God’s divine intervention to send rain. Perhaps Rocky Twyman, who had organized a gospel concert dedicated to rain, said it best. “We need to call on God, because what we are doing isn’t working.”
In spite of all the advances we have made over the years, we still have not created anything that equals the power of God. We will always need to call on God because there are some things we just can’t handle without Him. No matter how educated, how wealthy or how enlightened we claim to be, the answer to all of our problems, dilemmas and storms is really quite simple, God, the Author and Finisher, the Alpha and Omega. God and only God, in his time calmed the winds and the fires ceased. God and only God sent the rain to replenish the dry land. All we need do, all we can do is completely trust Him and be obedient to His word and our Father, who made heaven and earth, will do the rest.

The one about the rain is especially deep. By the way there has been a natural disaster (Tornado) in Tennessee and the way in which God shows Himself is awesome! I wonder if people are paying attention too! The news media reported several stories that came out of the Tornado; from the baby found alive to the teenage girls who expressed their thankfulness for just being alive, I write this as tears come to my eyes in praise because those girls had enough sense to be thankful to God for their life although everything was lost (and the media showed it – Hallelujah!). How many people are truly thankful! If we proclaim to be Christians one of the best things we can do is display our gratefulness for everything! In everything give thanks! Everything! So I am thankful to see God at work! His promise is that before the end of time every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord! In the midst of the storm, there are people who cry out to God and I believe that He answers when He shows us small wonders in the aftermath! And who did he use? The greatest gifts He could give any of us! Children!
