Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." 1Peter 1:13-16.
Last night my son and I were sitting watching the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox battle it out in an intense game. The Rays had made it to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history and many attributed it to the fact that the team had decided to make some changes. You see, the team's original name is the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and until this season, they proudly wore that name, blazened across their jerseys. Now, maybe out of desperation, I'm not sure, the ownership decided to drop the "devil" and to just use "Rays." In fact, anyone who mistakenly uses the old name is fined and the money is given to charity. Since the name change and committment to use it at all cost, the team has for the first time ever, experienced a winning season!
Isn't that just like our lives? When we decide to let go of the evil and the sin in our lives and commit to living holy lives, we begin to see the blessings God has for us. When we who belong to God begin to act like we belong to God our seasons turn from losing to winning. The scripture says that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that we may declare the praises of him who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. We can no longer walk around in darkness, running into brick walls of failure, and falling into pits of dispair and trouble. We must follow God into the light as his chosen people, walking with our eyes open to see all that God has for us to do and to recieve as his chosen ones. Jesus paid the ultlimate price for us and we as Christians must proudly wear His name blazened across our chest and begin praising him and acting like his royal priesthood. God's team is the winning team and there is no victory in life as long as we continue to be Devil Rays! While we may not be swinging a bat in the playoffs hoping for a spot in the world series, are names are firmly etched on God's roster and that's the team that will always win no matter what battles life throws our way.
